1. At 11 a.m., observe a moment of silence for those who've fought and died while in service to the country
2. Display an American flag
3. Attend a Veterans Day parade
4. Thank a vet for his/her service
5. Send a letter to troops through the U.S. Department of Defense Website
6. Work in a homeless shelter or soup kitchen
7. Visit a veteran's grave or pick up trash at a veterans cemetery
8. Visit with the family of a veteran who's serving overseas
9. Visit with a wounded vet at a local VA facility
10. Donate to the USO, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars USA or other organizations that honor and assist vets

UNO CHICAGO GRILL - UNO's is offering a 19.43 percent discount off their entire food bill (excluding alcohol), no matter how many family members and friends they dine with, to all active duty military and veterans from November 7 through November 11. The percentage off is a nod to the year the company was founded, 1943.
7-ELEVEN - Free, small Slurpee drinks will be given to active, veteran, and retired members of the military and their immediate families at participating 7-Eleven stores on Friday, November 11. In addition, to thank active troops for their service, slurpee trucks will arrive at Norfolk Naval Base on November 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. as part of 7-Eleven, Inc.'s 'Operation Thank You. '

To honor current and retired members of the armed services, all national parks and wildlife refuges will remain open and offer free entry to vets and their families.

T.G.I. FRIDAYS - Buy one entree, get one free, for all U.S. military personnel and veterans on Friday, November 11. The special is valid only at participating locations.

Help Soldiers Call Home: Staying in touch with loved ones while abroad is key to survival, though the costs of calling home from Afghanistan or Iraq are incredibly high. Cell Phones For Soldiers is trying to change that. Each week the organization donates 12,000 calling cards to soldiers, providing enough money on each card for an hour of conversation.

APPLEBEE'S - Applebee's is offering a free meal for veterans and active duty military on November 11 in honor of Veterans Day. The restaurant is offering a choice of seven Signature entrees.

 

CHILI'S - Chilli's is offering a free meal for veterans on November 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The restaurant is offering a choice of seven entrees.

GOLDEN CORRAL - Golden Corral is offering a "thank you" dinner to anyone who has served in the U.S. Military as part of their 2011 Military Appreciation Monday. The dinner will be held Monday, November 14 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

HOOTERS - All veterans and active duty military personnel can receive 10 free boneless or traditional wings, with purchase of a drink, all day Friday, November 11.

TEXAS ROADHOUSE - Veterans and active duty military can select a free entree from a selected menu and a choice of a free Coca Cola product, iced tea/sweet tea, or coffee on Friday, November 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.



Thank you to all who have served,  are serving, have lost loved one in whatever branch of the military. War is a terrible thing because it means loss. As a mother of two sons - I can't imagine them not being on this Earth. I also want to take a moment to remember and think of family that are here and gone who have served in my family and are friends.

O Lord, today I thank You for our veterans, for their willingness to risk all so that our nation might dwell in peace and safety. May they find the honor and recognition they truly deserve. I pray that You will heal the physical, spiritual, and psychological wounds some of these veterans have suffered. Bring a lasting peace to those who mourn the loss of comrades. Help them to find Your love and mercy, so that they may cope with the actions they may have had to take while they served our country. Make them realize that the rules of engagement in war do not always follow the laws of Christianity, but give them solace by Your scripture passages that show them that sometimes battle is necessary for the common good. Amen.
